Class Rank and GPA

Updated Class Rank
AAR’s are recalculated in September and January for all students.
Final Senior rank is calculated in March.

The method Lewisville ISD uses to calculate GPA is described on page 8 of the course selection guide as follows:

All grades earned in the four areas of English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies will be used to determine rank in class and GPA. Within these four areas, difficulty levels are assigned to every course. (Outside of these four areas, no courses will carry a difficulty level nor will they be used to determine rank in class or GPA.) Grades are weighted according to the assigned level as follows:
level 1 is 1.2; level 2 is 1.1; level 3 is 1.0. These weights are referred to as Course Grade Multipliers. The computed score is then totaled and divided by the number of foundation courses taken (averaged). These averages will be placed in numerical order from highest to lowest. The highest average shall be number one in class. GPA will be reported numerically. Summer school, correspondence courses, on-line courses, credit by acceleration, dual credit courses, credits by exam and eighth grade courses are not included for GPA calculations.

For entering freshman (04-05) all grades earned in the areas of English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language, any AP Course, and ACDEC will be used to determine rank in class and GPA. Within these areas, difficulty levels are assigned to every course. (Outside of these areas, no courses will carry a difficulty level nor will they be used to determine rank in class or GPA.) Grades are weighted according to the assigned level as folows: level 1 is 1.2; level 2 is 1.1; level 3 is 1.0. These weights are referred to as Course Grade Multipliers. The computed score is then totaled and divided by the number of courses taken (averaged) in these areas. These average will be placed in numerical order from highest to lowest. The highest average shall be number one in class. GPA will be reported numerically. Summer school, correspondence courses, on-line courses, credit by acceleration, dual credit courses, credits by exam and eighth grade courses are not included for GPA calculations.

The ACTUAL grade earned in ALL CLASSES will be entered on the report card and the transcript (AAR).

The Valedictorian will have the highest GPA in the class based on four years of work.  The student must be enrolled during his/her entire senior year.  Early graduates are not eligible for being Valedictorian.

The Salutatorian will have the second highest GPA in the class based on four years of work.  The student must be enrolled during his/her entire senior year.  Early graduates are not eligible for being Salutatorian.

Because newly enrolled students are not included in this class rank, it is not always 100% accurate.

What is the importance of class rank? College admission requirements are often based on class rank, college entrance examination scores, and curriculum requirements. At many public universities, your class rank determines what score you have to earn on a college entrance exam in order to be admitted. For example, a student who ranks in the top quarter of the classes may score lower on an entrance exam than a student in the second quarter of the class.

How can I improve my class rank? Start now! Devote the necessary time to do well on every assignment. Exercise good study skills. Attend tutorial sessions when you are uncertain about information or concepts. Take challenging courses. Waiting until your junior year to work on class rank will not give you enough time to make a significant difference. The rank you use on most college admission applications will be the one you receive that includes grades from 9th through 11th grade years. You will have to demonstrate to a college that you have maintained your grades by sending a final transcript, but this is after most admission decisions have been made.

How often will I get my class rank? Class rank will be distributed in early September of the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade years, in late January of 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, and at the end of the third nine weeks of the 12th grade year. Your class rank will not be recalculated between these postings. No class ranks will be given out over the phone. No student may request another student's class rank.
