Sculpture & Ceramics

1115 Art II Sculpture- Grade 10-12 Prerequisite: Art 1                            This course is designed to provide advanced training in the specialized area of Sculpture and three-dimensional related work.  Student will explore specific media in sculpture including clay, papier mache, wire, metal, paper, wood, and other media.

 1145 Ceramics II- Grade 10-12 Prerequisite: Art I                                  This course will provide the student opportunities to explore a variety of hand building techniques, decorative techniques, and simple glaze techniques.  Additional content will include throwing simple shapes on the potters’ wheel and the use if decorative oxides and under glazes.  A fee may be charged to cover the cost of materials.

 1131 Art III Sculpture- Grades 11-12 Prerequisite: Sculpture 2, Teacher Recommendation.  This course is designed to further the basic knowledge of sculpture media and techniques, but also to begin creating conceptually based work in preparation for the advanced placement three-dimensional design portfolio.

1135 Art III Ceramics- Grades 11-12 Prerequisite: Ceramics 2, Teacher Recommendation.  This course is designed to further the basic knowledge of ceramics media and techniques, but also to begin creating conceptually based work in preparation for the advanced placement three-dimensional design portfolio.

1150 Art IV Ceramics or Art IV Sculpture- Grades 11-12 Prerequisite: Ceramics 3 or Sculpture 3, Teacher Recommendation.  This course is designed to evolve conceptually based work into an artist’s portfolio in preparation for advanced placement three dimensional portfolio.  Students will be given general guidelines and expected to take over the creative reigns of their work.

 1160 Advanced Placement 3-Dimensional Portfolio:  Grades 11-12 Prerequisite: Ceramics 4 or Sculpture 4, Teacher Recommendation.  This develops the ability to create three-dimensional visual ideas within the College Board Guidelines.  The development of personal style through the critical and disciplined development of a quality portfolio is encouraged.  Students are expected to create their own cohesive body of work and participate in the Advanced Placement examination which consists of a portfolio.

Courses Offered:

 1100 Art I- Grades 9-12       Prerequisite: None                               Basic elements and principles of design are explored through various art media.  Art criticism, aesthetics, and art history as well as creative problem solving are used to further the understanding of art.

Drawing and Painting

1105 Art II Drawing Grade 10-12     Prerequisite: Art I

This course is for the person with a high level of self-motivation who is interested in an increased knowledge of art.  Two and three-dimensional projects are produced with emphasis on drawing or painting application.

1116 Art III Drawing/Painting Grade 11-12  Prerequisite: Art 1, 2

 This course is designed for the seriously motivated artist.  Experimental artwork is explored.  An advanced, creative, investigative approach is taken toward all projects.  A high level of self-motivation is needed because some time is given to the artist to explore the area of painting as well as other areas in which the artist is most interested.  The artist also applies critical thinking to his own work and that of others (past and present).

1140 Art IV /Advanced Placement (AP) Prerequisite: Art I, II, III, & Teacher Approval  Grade 12  

This course develops the ability to create visual ideas within College Board guidelines.  The development of personal style through the critical and disciplined development of a quality portfolio is stressed.

Art History

AP Art History  Prerequisite: None

Students examine and critically analyze art from a variety of cultures beginning with ancient civilizations through current art trends.  Context, cultural impact, historical significance are all part of the Art History experience. This class also emphasizes written expression in preparation for the essay portion of the AP exam as well as identification and recognition of a wide range of art styles through history. The course counts as a fine art credit for high school purposes, but in addition, successful completion of the AP exam can lead to college credit.
