ENGLISH I
At the freshman level, students read, examine, and analyze various
genres of literature. Students are
expected to respond intellectually in both oral and written forms. Through employing the writing process, students
acquire the tools necessary to evaluate their own writing and the writing
of their peers. Review and expansion
of both vocabulary and grammar skills are ongoing. Ultimately, English I focuses on the continuing
development of mature language and composition skills and critical reading
while enjoying and learning about ourselves as people and a society. Freshmen should be prepared to juggle the demanding
course outline with extra-curricular activities.
ENGLISH II
English
at the sophomore level focuses on the continuing development of mature language
and composition skills through critical reading of thematically organized
literature across genres and related selections of world literature that
enhances the global and universal perspective of the literary experience and
human nature. All facets of language
arts study are integrated into cohesive units that encourage students to make
connections to their own lives and the world around them. In addition, students are encouraged to
recognize that all learning is process based.
ENGLISH III
English
III is a college preparatory course in which students will gain a more
sophisticated understanding of the deeper meanings of literature, develop an
appreciation for noteworthy American authors, and will continue to develop
effective written responses to literature.
They will also focus on vocabulary development and grammar as it relates
to the writing process and in preparation for successful scoring on SAT and ACT
exams.
ENGLISH IV
In anticipation of matriculating into collegiate level academics, English
IV includes a variety of learning modes with emphasis on integrating the study
of composition, grammar, mechanics, and vocabulary into British literature. A broad array of literary genres and time periods
will be studied to afford each student a working knowledge of and an appreciation
for the broad scope that British literature entails.
