Join the Junior Classical League!  (JCL)

Join JCL (Latin Club) and be part of a national organization.  Compete with members of other clubs in both state and national competitions.  We have academic, artistic, and Olympic events.  Make friends with students from all parts of the USA!  We’ll also have banquets, go skating and bowling, and attend cultural events in the city of Dallas.

Travel to Italy!

Every year or two, Latin students have the opportunity to travel to Italy to see Rome and Pompeii.   Walk in the footsteps of Julius Caesar for a few days.  See the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, and eat your share of Italian gelato.

latin is the basic language!

Why is Latin so ideal?

You may not know which language your college will require.  Latin will prepare you for ALL of the Romance languages—French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian—because they are all direct descendants of Latin.  Because of its sentence structure, Latin can also help you understand German, Russian, and other languages which use word endings.

Careers for which Latin would be useful

Law—Terms such as habeas corpus and nolo contendere are part of the everyday vocabulary of attorneys.

MedicineFor over a thousand years Latin was the language of medicine.  Both doctors and pharmacists use Latin terms and abbreviations such as t.i.d. and Rx everyday.

Science—Many scientific terms are Latin-based, e.g., names of elements:  Au = aureum, gold.  Names for genus and species of animals are often Latin-based as well.
