What Is Academic Decathlon?

Taken from the official USAD website;"The Academic Decathlon™" is a ten-event scholastic competition for teams of high school students. Each high school enters a team of nine students: 3 "A" or Honor students, 3 "B" or Scholastic students, and 3 "C" or Varsity students."

But What Must I Do?

Academic Decathlon, most often shortened to AcDec or AcaDec, is a competition with a series of ten events spread out over a two day period. On the first day competitors compete in: Essay writing, Speech, and Interview.
On the second day of competition, the competitors complete the rest of the tests, finishing with the Super Quiz Relay, soon followed by the awards ceremony.
Teams consist of nine members and three alternates/observers. The nine competitors must come from all three grade ranges:
  1. " A" or students with a GPA of 3.75-4.0 (Also known as the "Honors" Team)
  2. " B" or students with a GPA of 3.00-3.74 (Also known as the "Scholastic" Team)
  3. "C" or students with a GPA of 0.00-2.99 (Also known as the "Varsity" Team)

  4. All nine competitors compete in all ten events, with the two highest OVERALL scores from each category being used to create the teams final score.

Is there a class I have to sign up for?

There is a class offered for those students who wish to take it. The class is designed to prepare the students to compete and is open to all students regardless of GPA or grade level. The class can be taken for any amount of time: 9 weeks, 18 weeks, 27 weeks, etc. It is possible to join the class at any point in the year and the class gives a local elective credit.
The class counts as a Level I GPA credit for all students.

What happens if I do not make the team?

Those students who are freshmen and sophomores are able to try out for not only the Academic Decathlon team, but the Academic Octathlon as well. The Octathlon team is made up of the same number of students as the Decathlon from the same grade categories. The team competes in April and competes in all the same categories as the Decathlon team minus the Speech and Interview. However; once a student has competed on the Decathlon team he or she is unable to compete in Academic Octathlon.
